Microsoft Teams: Chat Features

Microsoft Teams has a lot of features. Learn about some of the Chat features here.

Chat with your SharePoint teams in the Teams section of the app. Department group chats do not need to be created manually.

Start a One-on-One Chat

  1. Click the New Chat button. Teams switches to Chat view, and a new blank chat is started.
  2. Enter the name of the person you want to chat with in the To field and select them from the search results.
  3. Enter a message in the message box at the bottom of the content pane.
  4. Click Send to start your conversation.

Create a Group Chat on-the-fly

  1. Click the New Chat button. Teams switches to Chat view, and a new blank chat is started.
  2. Enter the names of people you want to chat with in the To field and select them from the result list
  3. Expand the to field to add a group name
  4. Enter a message in the message box at the bottom of the Content pane.
  5. Click Send to start your conversation.

Add People to an Ongoing Chat

  1. Click the Add People button at the top of a chat screen.
  2. Enter the name of the person you want to add, then select them from the search results.
  3. Choose how much of the group’s chat history the new person can view.
    You can allow the new person to see all of the messages in the group’s chat history, set a number of days they’re able to view, or bring them in without allowing them to see any history at all.

Formatting your Message

Just like in Word, formatting options are available!

  1. Click the Format button below the chat message compose box.
  2. Formatting buttons appear above the compose box. Select the text you want to format. Click a formatting option.
    All of the basic formatting tools are available, as well as headings, highlighting, and quotes

React to a Message

Reactions are little bits of feedback that let you reflect how a message made you feel.

  1. Hover your mouse cursor over a message.
    When you hover your mouse over a message, a pop-up menu with some options appears above it. These reactions will let you express whether you like it, love it, or find it funny, surprising, sad, or angering.
  2. Click a reaction button in the pop-up menu.

Manage your Chat List

When your chat list builds up, you have a few ways to manage them!

Pin a Contact or Group

Hover your mouse over a chat in the List pane, click the More Options ••• button, then select Pin.

Mute a Contact or Group

Hover your mouse over a chat in the List pane, click the More Options ••• button, then select Mute.

Hide Old Chats

Hover your mouse over a chat in the List pane, click the More Options ••• button, then select Hide.
