Meeting Purpose

Review Public Address System, Public Comment Policy draft for board meeting updates on department issues, events, and discussions.

Public Address System and Public Comment

Thad Hartman reported that the Board of Trustees will be acting on Public Meeting Room and Event Spaces Use Policy and reviewing Public Address System Use and Public Comment Policies at the January Board of Trustees Meeting. As a reminder library policy will be taken to the board of trustees’ meetings. The board will act on policies monthly. Board of Trustees Meeting Agendas & Packets can be located at

Services to Spanish Speakers

Thad Hartman introduced Kelli Smith, that led the discussion of Services to Spanish Speakers. Staffing, resources, services, service model, and programs were discussed. A group has been assigned to build a comprehensive service model for our Spanish speaking community. This group consists of Autumn Friedli, Diana Friend, Gina Millsap, LeAnn Brungardt, Margo Rangel, Paul Brennan, Robert Soria, Sandy Hestand, Scarlett Fisher – Herreman, Marie Pyko, Debbie Stanton, and Kelli Smith (Facilitator). Meeting is scheduled for January 27, 2020.

Area Updates and Reminders

Greg: Please do not park in the staff parking lot on February 17.

LeAnn: Teen Librarian and Outreach Story Teller positions have been filled. Currently working on a grant/talking books provided by the Kansas Health Foundation (KHF)

Ivan: Facilities currently have a Custodian (Part – Time) position available. Please visit for further information.

Stephanie: Jeff Kready event is scheduled for February 16, 3:30 – 5:00 pm. Tickets are available at Eventbrite: Please note first come first seating in the auditorium. Additional satellite locations in the library will be provided.

Kristin: As a reminder February 17th is Staff Day. You can locate 2020 Staff Development Day Details at Review agenda and choose a break out session. At the January 28 meeting 2019 Staff Training Program Summary presentation will be provided.

Kim: Calendar year 2019 is officially closed.

Darci: Currently working W-2 Electronic/Paper Copy election. When filling out a requisition ensure that the project number is included, needed for approval.

Debbie: The Gallery opening is scheduled for April. The theme of the opening reflects the past, present, and future. Future art/digital pieces are being reviewed, pending grand opening. Amazingly 3000 photos have been scanned for the event so far.

Thad: CEO/CSO reminder of report deadlines and what information is needed for reports. Reports are apart of the TSCL Board of Trustees meeting/board packets.

Gina: As a reminder please see that board of trustee reports are turned in timely, reports are not an option. Reports are relevant and are needed for the board packets. Following a meeting with Dean of Washburn Tech East, Dr, Gary Bayens and Direct Chaz Havens TSCL can work with Washburn Tech East on providing library services and programs. Currently the Executive Team is working with The Moran Company to assist in seeking candidates that are interested in The Library Foundation Executive Director position.

Nancy: The Library Foundation through the generosity of donors Dick and Donna Crawford offers each year a scholarship to provide assistance for a staff member furthering his/her education.  To apply, the application must be postmarked or in The Library Foundation office by the end of day Friday, February 7, 2020. This is a $1,000 scholarship that may be used for any type of continuing education by staff who are employed by the Library and have at least six-months employment at the library with satisfactory performance. Mary: 2020 Book & Media Sales are scheduled for Saturday, Feb 1, 9am-4pm and Sunday, Feb 2, noon-3pm Bag Sale. Visit: for additional information. Currently the Friends of the library have two employment opportunities: Friends of the Library – Part-time Book Prep and Internet Sales Coordinator and Part-time Bookstore Associate. David: As a reminder Communico is scheduled to go live in February. Moving forward on security camera project. Public computer rolls out this month. Oakland Community Center computers will be the first to be replaced.

Scarlett: Congratulations go out to Nicole Hansen on her new position with the State Library of Kansas. Shawn Nyberg has assumed Nicole’s duties. Beanstack -Winter Reading Challenge has thus far been a success. For further information visit:

Diana: 150th Mug’s are available in the Booktique for $6.50, great response so far. Dave Berkshire will produce the 150th video. Don’t forget to check into Communico Training at Communico goes live on Monday, February 3rd. Lastly, Sherlock is scheduled to be rewrapped.

John: As reminder please ensure that staff be aware of the Customer Conduct Policy and acceptable behavior.

Sandy: The library’s Book Bike made its parade debut accompanied by the Adventuremobile at the 24th annual Miracle on Kansas Avenue parade. See website:

Paul: Security gate is fully functional.

Ruth: Shared her success in obtaining six exercise classes to library staff and would like the library to assist in providing additional classes.

Kelli: The library will once again be providing a venue for the Manhattan Short 2020. See link for further details:

    Hi all, I’ve had a number of staff comment to me regarding the lack of Spanish speakers on the team listed above re: service to Spanish speakers. I want to assure you that this initial group is simply working on a project/team charter, which will have to be signed by any managers that would have staff participating in creating the plan. We have to determine the scope of the plan first before we can decide which staff would be most useful in the various aspects (such as community outreach, collection, etc.). Hopefully that makes sense and alleviates concerns. Thanks! Debbie
