Meeting Purpose: Hear reports from staff members attending Innovative Users Group Conference (IUG); Human Resources – Supervisor Training; area updates

Expected Products: review of materials relating to Supervisor Training

Scarlett Fisher-Herreman called the May 3, 2018 meeting of the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library Management Council to order at 2:00 PM in the Marvin Auditorium 101C. She reviewed the meeting purpose and provided an overview of the agenda. There were no notes/minutes taken at the April 19th meeting.

Innovative Users Group reports

Scarlett Fisher-Herreman, David King, Ruth Rodden, Adrienne Sanders and Shannon Eddings attended the conference. Scarlett provided an overview of the Innovative Group an how their products support public libraries. About 700 people were in attendance for the conference and the attendees represented an international group.

Shannon reported on plans for LEAP. Innovative shared some highlights of what they are working on and what can be expected in the next few upgrades of Polaris and LEAP. More details can be found on the Intranet https://intranet.tscpl.org/tech/2018/05/planning-ahead-polaris-leap. A project she brought back relates to using Polaris reports directly in our Baker and Taylor selection too. She also is looking at ways for customizing notices for requests. These will include suggestions for other items for customers to look at and check out.

Adrienne attended sessions on linked data. She provided a quick overview of how linked data works and what is happening in that area which includes turning/converting marked data into linked data. She also spoke about vital digital asset management, and project management.

Scarlett spoke more about linked data and the sessions she attended. These included Structured Query (SQL), and an ICard initiative with schools presented by the Fayetteville Arkansas Public Library. Scarlett also attended a session on Book Bikes. (Gina had some additional information about book bikes which is attached https://www.library.pima.gov/blogs/post/public-library-book-bikes-history-and-how-to and graphic from Greene County Public Library in Ohio.)

David King reported that James Tallman, Innovative CEO, spoke and discussed the merger of Polaris and Sierra, the new discovery area, and new visual search engines. David met with our new account manager. He also reported that David Lankes was keynote speaker, his topic was Smart Cities.

 Human Resources update

Human Resources Director Jesse Maddox distributed information regarding new supervisor training. Time frame, number of hours for formal training and determining who needed what types of training and orientation were discussed. First week schedule for new supervisors was discussed.

Area Updates

Gina Millsap reported that All Staff meetings will take place May 23. Agenda items will include:

  • Overview of new plan
  • Introduce new supervisors
  • security changes – additional FTE
  • chief of staff position posted
  • changes to homework center

Gina reported that one new trustee has been appointed.

Topics and projects for upcoming meetings

  • Services offered by the Library: Facilitation – Librarian / Management Team
  • Human Resources Training – Jesse Maddox and Felicia Hillebert
  • Utilizing data when communicating to staff, board, and public
  • New Data Source – Thad Hartman
  • Invite Library Attorney Chuck Engel – review of Kansas Law (March or April)

Meeting adjourned

There was no additional business to bring to the attention of the group and the meeting was adjourned at 3:03PM.
