Tax Form Information 2021

Tax Forms – 2021 Edition

Hello everyone – Tax season will be starting soon so here is an update on tax forms and what we know and don’t know at this point.

We will be receiving Federal and State tax forms.  A change this year is that we will not receive 1099 forms.  Patrons can order 1099 forms for free at irs.gov, or purchase them at office supply stores.  I’ll put some instructions on how to order 1099 forms at the bottom of this post.

Forms that have been ordered are listed below.  I do not have any information on when we receive these forms.  If I get any shipping notices from the IRS I will let staff know.

As for how we will distribute the forms, we are still working on the details for that.  We have talked about having them at curbside for people to pick up there, as, and having them in the building somewhere but I’m not sure if staff will hand them out or patrons will be able to just grab them themselves- those are the sort of details that still need to be worked out.

Forms we will receive:

Federal:

Form 1040

Form 1040 Instruction booklet

Kansas:

K-40 form

Kansas Schedule S

Kansas Homestead form

Additional forms or instructions may be printed from irs.gov and from https://www.ksrevenue.org/forms-ii.html

Prior year tax forms – we have a small stash of these in the Call Center, and they can also be printed from the IRS and KS Revenue websites.

Here is how to order 1099-MISC forms:

Go to irs.gov

Click on search forms and instructions

Click on Order Forms and Pubs

Click on Online Ordering for Information Returns and Employer Returns

That will take them to the form to order 1099 (and other employer) forms.

Update: I have received a shipping notice for the 1040 forms – they are supposed to arrive on 1/19. As we know, shipping estimates are not always accurate, so I will update again when we actually get them!

Is there a phone number for VITA in Topeka? Who can we refer people to if they have specific questions that we can’t answer – how will the tax assistance by mail work, etc.?

    • Meredith and I were just talking about that today. I don’t think there is much info at the moment. Meredith is going to call KS State Extension to see what they know. They are the ones who have been handling that most recently.
