Summer Reading Info

Hi, All!

Well, summer is upon us!  Be sure to take your vitamins!  I just wanted to send some information about the reading portion of the program. Most of you probably know this already, but for those of you who don’t….here goes:



Be Creative @ Your Library

YS Summer Reading 2009      Ages:   Birth – (going into) 6th grade

Reading Portion:     

Reading logs – will be available at the library, on bookmobiles or online on/after May 27th·         Prizes – ALL PRIZES SUBJECT TO AVAIABILITY

§  4 hour (June 8) – McDonald’s, Applebees

§  8 hour (June 22) – Gage Bowl, Carlos O’Kelleys

§  12 hour (July 6) – Prize Bag – CiCi’s, Coldstone, Auntie Anne’s Pretzels, pencil, notepad, funny face sticker, Daily Aha newspaper, bookmark, book, entry into Grand Prize Drawing.

§  16 hour (July 20) – Straightwater, Hazel Hill, (NO BOOK), entry into Grand Prize Drawing.

§  Grand Prizes – 4 tickets to Worlds of Fun, (2) Family passes to Gage Park

§  Grand Prize Drawing at Summerfest Blowout Wednesday, July 29th

§  Last day to pick up prizes – Aug. 10, 2009


·         Tuesday programs 10-11 am – Music, Dance, Drama, Visual Arts

o   We are partnering with different community partners this year – Topeka Civic Theatre, Helen Hocker Theater, Manning Music, Barbara’s Conservatory of Dance, Beverly Bernardi Post and Dr. Sylvia Hamilton.

o   Programs will be for 3yr olds- (going into) 2nd grade and 3rd – 6th grade.

·         Wednesday Blockbusters – 9:30-10:30 and 11-12

·         Thursdays – Partnered with Parks & Rec to do programs with their campers.

·         Puppet Shows and crafts – Wednesday nights (every other Wed.)

 Ending – Summerfest Blowout – Wed. July 29th   2-3:30 pm   Young Adult Program           Ages: 12-18 yearsTheme:      Express Yourself @ Your Library Reading Portion and Programs combined:·        

There will be 58 programs offered for Young Adults this summer.

·      Teens will earn points for prizes as follows:

       o   2 points for attending a program

       o   3 points for writing a blog (200 words)

       o   5 points for reading for an hour

o   The reading log is a calendar students will use to keep track of their points. It will list the programs available each day.


§  June 8 (25 points)  – McDonald’s meal

§  June 22 (50 points)  – Gage Bowl

§  July 6 (75 points)  – Prize Bag – CiCi’s, Coldstone, sticky notepad, mood pencil, magnet photo frame, book

§  July 20 (100 points)  – Straightwater, flying disc

§  Grand Prizes – (2)   $50 gift certificates

§  Grand Prize Drawing at ending party Thursday, July 30th.

§  Last day to pick up prizes – Aug. 10, 2009

 YA Ending – Creative Culinary Creations – Thursday July 30th 2-4pm
