Internal Posting: Library Associate, Half Time, Circulation

Title: Library Associate

Full-time/Part-time: Half-time

Department: Circulation

Reports To: Circulation Supervisor

Purpose of Position: To provide circulation services for patrons.

Essential Job Functions

  1. Circulate Library materials and maintain records such as check out and check in of materials.
  2. Provide customer service such as registering patrons, answer inquiries regarding patron records, direct patrons to appropriate service area or staff, provide general Library information, register voters, and handle emergencies, select and/or mail material.
  3. Operate switchboard/telephones effectively.
  4. Perform data entry tasks that relate to the status of patrons, equipment and materials.
  5. Collect appropriate fines or fees.
  6. Perform mail duties such as circulation notices and reservations.
  7. Check shelves for materials that may have returned but were not checked in.
  8. Represent the Library in a professional and courteous manner.
  9. Complete work assignments in a timely manner.
  10. Work as part of a team and independently.
  11. Assist with production of division publicity as needed.
  12. Maintain technology competency at a level determined by the Library.
  13. Serve on committees as assigned.
  14. Provide leadership and initiative in helping others to achieve their training goals.
  15. Keep current on trends in your related field and make recommendations for change and improvement based on your knowledge and experience.
  16. Maintain regular reliable attendance.

Other Job Functions

  1. Complete other duties and special projects as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

This position requires:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • competent computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite software applications and Internet searching techniques
  • strong written and oral communication skills

Other Requirements

This position operates in public and nonpublic areas. It requires a working knowledge of library technology such as computers, facsimile, copiers and audio/visual equipment. The work areas may contain book dust, molds, mildew and insects. This medium work position requires manual dexterity, bending, lifting/carrying at least 20-50 pounds, ability to exert 20-50 pounds of force when pushing/pulling materials, reaching, and the ability to climb stairs, talking on the telephone and stationary work at a computer terminal.  Fluency in other languages a plus.This position exists in a shared office environment with a need for cooperative interaction in many different circumstances. Prompt arrival and efficient, dependable maintenance of scheduled hours is a necessity. Evening and weekend hours are required.
