We have an immediate change to our digital magazine provider. All digital magazines are now at Flipster. We no longer have digital magazines at Overdrive. Here’s more information for you about this change:
Why did we discontinue with Overdrive magazines?
In December, Overdrive announced changes to its magazine platform. They are moving away from offering magazines on their own and instead going with magazines from Zinio (which we had years ago when we first started with digital magazines) that will be integrated into Libby. The reason they did this is that Overdrive was bought by KKR last year and KKR owns Recorded Books and Recorded Books owns Zinio. It makes sense that they’d integrate one product into the other. Rather than keep with their own magazine platform, they are pulling Zinio magazines into Libby but the management of the digital magazine subscriptions will take place with Zinio. It’s a little confusing and I wish they’d done it in a way that provides libraries with more choices regarding the content and also better pricing. The base price to participate is $40,000 per year and we’d have to purchase titles in bulk packages so we wouldn’t get to choose what we want on the platform. $40K is a large amount of money to spend for digital magazines, especially considering they’ve always had modest circulation at our library.
As we’ve continued to have Flipster magazines even after moving some titles over to Overdrive, I made the decision to move all digital magazines back to Flipster. I was able to move all of the most popular magazines back to Flipster. There are few less popular/more niche magazines that Flipster doesn’t have but I don’t think those will present an issue for most readers. We have a very nice digital magazine collection at Flipster, almost 100 titles! I added more titles for kids and families and bumped up the Spanish language magazine collection.
When does this change happen?
Right now! Overdrive pulled the magazines today, unfortunately with little notice. Customers who currently have magazines checked out will continue to have access through the end of the lending period.
All new titles are ready to go at Flipster. Please direct customers asking about digital magazines to Flipster.
The Flipster app is available in app stores for Apple and Android and Kindle Fire tablets. Flipster can also be used in a web version. Magazines can be downloaded or viewed online. Customers will login to Flipster using their card number and PIN #, as they do for online databases. Flipster is an EBSCO product.
