Questions About Curbside Service Safety

There were a some questions in yesterday’s all staff meeting about what is being done to keep staff working in curbside service safe. I’ve listed safety changes we’ve implemented in the last few months below.

  1. Removed shelving units in the sun room to help with social distancing in that space.
  2. Purchased reflector vests for staff to use when it is dark and stormy.
  3. The outside building and parking lot lights are adjusted as the days shorten.
  4. An air purifier will be added to the sun room as soon as possible to provide better air quality in the space.
  5. Speed bumps have been installed in the area to slow cars down.

You may have heard about or seen customers drive as fast as they can serpentine style through that drive to avoid the speed bumps. To remedy this, 2 more speed bumps have been ordered and will be installed as soon as they arrive. They will be placed in line with the current speed bumps so drivers cannot avoid them.

If you have any other questions or suggestions, feel free to share them with everyone in the comment section.

The library-branded umbrellas are black on the outside and do not appear to have any reflective material. Should we consider getting more brightly colored umbrellas to improve visibility?

They also make reflective tape we could add to the umbrellas if it would be more cost effective.

Yes, we have been exploring some ideas and will share them with everyone once we have a more finalized procedure.

I’m ordering more reflector vests today. Circulation staff will be receiving their own since they work the space multiple hours everyday. I am purchasing more “community” vests and am working on a process to communicate which are clean so you can grab one to use and also where to store the vest you wore at the end of your shift so it can be laundered.

In addition, 2 LED light clips will be purchased for staff to clip in their vests or wear on their wrist. They can be cleaned easily between users. For extra fun, glow sticks will also be available at curbside. Feel free to be creative and use them but please reserve glow stick fun for evening hours when it is dusk or dark.
